Circle & Drivetime Study Areas
Quickly and seamlessly profile the demographics of an area of interest by utilizing the many study area tools. In This article will focus on the circle and drivetime option but see all the study area types possible
here.Creating a Circle or Drivetime/Distance Study Area
In this section we’ll review how to create study areas for circle, drivetime, and drive distance study areas. The type of study area you are creating will dictate which icon to select. Review the Types of Study Areas section if you are unfamiliar with the different types of study areas. Choosing the Site:
Select a site to use as the centroid (center point) of the study area. There are three options when selecting a site:
- Use an already existing pin, such as a store location
- Use the search bar to locate an address or set of coordinates
- Click on the map to place a site
Use an existing pin
- Make sure the layer is turned on in the layers panel and the data is visible on the map.
- Navigate to the site of interest by panning and zooming, or by using the search bar at the top
- Click on the pin to expose the Infobox and then click on the preferred study area icon

Use the Search Bar
- At the top of the map is the search bar. Click on the text box.
- Type in or paste the address or coordinates of the site you're interested in and hit enter.

- The map will quickly zoom to that site. You’ll notice a pin has been placed at this location and an Infobox is visible.
- If the Infobox is not visible, click on the pin.
- In the Infobox, click on the preferred study area icon

Click on the Map
- Select the circle or drive study area icon on the main tool bar at the top of the map tab.

- Please check out the Polygon or Predefined study area articles for more information on how to create them. They do not require creating a centroid.
- Next, click on the desired location on the map.
Defining the Study Area
After choosing a site, the study area dialog box will appear.
- Name: This will default to the street address or the main field if run from a table. It can be manually changed to make each study area more easily distinguishable.
- Range Unit of Measurement Dropdown: The options here will change depending on the type of study area used.
- Circle will include miles and kilometers.
- Drive study areas will include time and distance options (miles/kilometers).

- Range: Specify the distance or time the study area will capture by entering a numeric value.
- You can create multiple study areas of the same type by entering several numbers delimited by commas. For example: 1,3,5-mile rings can all be made at once.
- To profile the area between two rings (often called a 'doughnut'), enter a range such as '3-5'. This will profile the area between three and five miles from the target site. This feature can only be used for circle study areas.
- Optional: Check the 'Save' box to save the study area to your bank of Saved Study Areas or to a table and/or layer of your choosing. You can also Create a New Table from Scratch if you want to keep track of multiple study areas. After creating the table, you will need to add it as a layer, enabling you to look at multiple study area projects at a time.
- If you have chosen to save the study area to the Saved Study Area repository, you can check the Share box to share the study area with other users in your organization.
- Remember, this is not a necessary step. All study areas are automatically saved to a project when created. For more information on Saved Study Areas, check out the article linked above.
- Optional: Check the 'Stay on the map tab' box to prevent Sitewise from automatically switching to the Profile tab after you click Search. This is useful if you intend to create more study areas.
- When ready, click
to profile the study area. Find out more about the profile tab and how to navigate it here.
Editing Study Areas
Circle
If a more detailed review of a circle study area is required, then it can be broken down into quadrant sections for further analysis:
- Click on the pin
icon in the middle of the study area. - In the Infobox, select the
icon. - The profile tab will automatically open for analysis of the newly created quadrants.
- The segments are broken down by direction such as Northwest, Southeast, etc.
- The
icon can be selected in the map tab to confirm the corresponding segments such as NE, SW, etc. also.

Drivetime and Drive Distance
Drive study areas are created based on a specific time or distance parameters, so the shape cannot be edited as study areas.
What’s Next?
- Need to save the circle or drive study areas to a table? Study areas are a great way to better understand the area before committing to a shape, such as franchise territories or trade areas. You are able to save any of the study area types discussed above to a polygon table. Once saved to a table, the polygon shape can be edited as needed. To learn more about this option, review the Working with Point & Polygon Data article.
- Need to review the demographic data offline? Export the information from the profile tab to a standard report. You’ll find steps in this article.
