Sitewise makes managing your data easy. This article will review how to make edits to point and polygon layers, including adding and moving points, and reshaping polygons.

Note: It’s important to note that in some accounts, certain tables might have a different data management process or may be linked to automated updates. If you are not sure about the editing process for a layer, reach out to the
Sitewise team.
Adding a New Point Location
- Open the layers panel and find the layer you want to add a point to.
- The layers panel is on the right-hand side of the Map tab. Check out our Map Navigation article for more information about using the layer panel and the Working with Layers video.
- Click on the check box beside the layer name to turn it on. You should be able to see the locations on the map.
- There are two methods for adding a new location:
- Address Search
- If you have the exact address or the location coordinates, type them into the top search bar.
- Sitewise will navigate to it using Google search
- In the popup window, click on the bottom arrow to expand the options.
- Add this location to the table by clicking on the database icon.

- A Save to Layer popup will appear and, in the dropdown, click on the table name, then click okay.
- The right panel will change allowing you to fill out the necessary fields for this location.
- Once all necessary fields have been filled out, click Save.
- Pan & Zoom
- This method is useful when you don’t have an exact address. Use the search bar to help navigate to the general area you want to place the location.
- Use the pan and zoom functionality to fine tune where you are on the map.
- On the layers panel, click on the layer name to expose the layer options.
- Click on the Add Location icon and the mouse will turn into a crosshair.

- Click on the map where you want to place the new location.
- The layer icon will appear, and the right panel will change so you can fill out the data for this new location.
- When you have finished filling out the fields, click Save.
Moving Point Data
- Navigate to the point you want to move.
- Click on the point, holding the left mouse button to drag it to its new location.
- A popup will appear confirming the location change.
- If yes, click the checkbox and click on the move button to confirm.

A helpful tip when moving points to the correct location is to switch the base map to one of the aerial options. This allows you to see a satellite image of the area, making it easier to accurately place your point.
Deleting Records
Always use caution when deleting records.
- Make sure the layer you would like to edit is turned on in the layers panel.
- Navigate to a location that you would like to remove on the map. Use the search bar at the top or pan and zoom to the right location.
- Click on the icon to expose the infobox.
- At the bottom of the infobox there is a list of actions. The garbage can icon will delete the record.

- Click on the garbage can icon.
- A popup will appear asking you to confirm the deletion.
- Click on the check box and then click delete.
- The record will no longer be visible on the map.
Note: It’s important to make sure only the right records are deleted. If a record was deleted by accident, we may be able to recover it however it can be difficult to sift through the data logs, similar to finding a needle in a haystack. If you have deleted a record, reach out to
Sitewise Support as soon as possible and include the following information:
- The name of the layer the record deleted from
- The Name, ID, Location, Address, Lat/Long of the record and any other identifiable information
- The date and time the record was deleted. Note that the date must be as specific as possible and, for improved success, the time range must be narrow.
- The username of the user who deleted the record
Editing Fields
- Make sure the layer you would like to edit is turned on in the layers panel.
- Navigate to a location that you would like to remove from the map. Use the search bar at the top or pan and zoom to the right location.
- Click on the icon to expose the infobox.
- At the bottom of the infobox there is a list of actions.
- The garbage can icon will delete the record so be cautious when using this option to avoid accidentally deleting the wrong record.
- The pencil icon beside it is what we want to use to make field edits.
- If you see a magnifying glass icon, it means that you do not have edit permissions. By clicking on the magnifying glass, you can still view the data for this location. If this is the case, but you need to make edits please reach out to your organization administrator or the Sitewise team.

- Click on the pencil.
- The layers panel has changed to display the details of this location.
- Scroll through the fields listed and make edits to the fields as needed.
- When finished making edits, click the save button at the bottom of the panel.
- To check your changes, click into the infobox then click on the pencil to review the fields.
- If you have not made any edits, click the x button at the top to close the layer panel.
Editing Polygon Shapes
- Make sure the layer is turned on in the map.
- Navigate to the area you want to edit using the search bar or pan and zoom to the right area.
- Click on the polygon shape to expose the infobox.
- There is a garbage can button for deleting the shape and a pencil button for editing the fields.
- For more information about how to edit fields, see the section Editing Fields in this article.
- Click on the reshape polygon button to expose all options to edit shapes in Sitewise: shape, clip, append, and buffer.

Shape
The shape tool allows you to reshape a polygon feature by clicking and dragging the shape’s nodes. This is easiest to use with simpler shapes. The more complex the shape is, the more nodes are created which can make it difficult to move the right node. For more complex shapes, the clip and append tools are great options.
- Click on the shape button and you’ll notice many nodes appear around the polygon shape.
- When using this method, continue to click and drag nodes until you’re satisfied with the new shape.
- Each line segment has a transparent node in the middle, which can be used to create a new node.
- To add another node, click and drag the new node and notice the shape change.
- If you’d like to remove a node, highlight it with your mouse and right-click.
- At the top left, is a yellow box. When happy with the changes you’ve made, click the finished button.
- The shape will quickly update to match the changes you made.
Clip
The clip tool allows you to remove a portion of a polygon by drawing an area around what you want to remove.
- In the edit shape popup, click on clip and then click on an area outside the polygon.
- A blue line will appear behind the mouse as you draw the shape.
- Continue drawing the shape until you have surrounded the area you want to remove from the polygon.
- Click the original node to close the shape or double click the mouse.
- The polygon will be updated and reshaped to not include the area that was just clipped.
Append
The append tool works very similar to the clip tool however instead of removing an area, we are adding it.
- Click on append and click inside the polygon to start drawing the shape you want to add.
- Continue to draw, creating the new area that will be added to the polygon.
- When you’re happy with the new addition, click on the first node to close the shape or double click the mouse.
- The polygon will update to include the shape you just added.
Buffer
This is a unique option that allows you to very quickly increase the size of your polygon in every direction by a set distance.
- Click on the buffer button.
- A new popup will appear. Use the drop-down to choose distance units and type in the distance you want to add as a buffer around the polygon. By default, it’s set to one mile.
- Set the buffer distance and click okay.
- It may take a few moments to update but when complete, the new buffered polygon will appear.
- After the polygon has been buffered, use the shape, clip, and append tools to make any additional adjustments to the polygon.
