Rank Reports

Rank Reports

Rank reports are used to pull detailed demographics and variable data within a specified geographic area. Use this tool to run a report to pull demographic information, such as population count, for all CBSA's in the United States or to pull a list of Zip codes within a single study area. This information can be invaluable when finding new markets or for assisting your marketing team to help identify the right cohort to target. In this article we'll review the two methods to generate a rank report.

Creating a Report Using Standard Geographies

This method allows us to generate a Rank Report pulling information about smaller geographies that fall within a larger geography.

Selecting Geographies

  1. Click on the lightning bolt icon
  2. In the report drop-down, select Rank Report then click Next
  3. Select a geography as your base from the Select a Census or Postal Area drop-down. This will be the larger, base geography. Click Next.

  4. In the Rank Geography drop-down, select the geography you would like to gather information on. The geography listed here will be smaller than the geography chosen in the previous step.
  5. Navigate to the section Setting Up the Variable Set to start adding demographic or layer variables to pull in the report.
    1. Running the report at this stage without any variables selected will output a file with a list of the chosen geography that is in the search area (i.e., list of all DMAs within the country). Skip to the Running the Rank Report section below.

Creating the Report Using a Study Area

This method allows us to generate a Rank Report pulling information from the geographies that fall within a study area around a site. One possible use case for this may be to collect the population of all Zip codes within a 10-minute drivetime of a store location.
  1. Click on the lightning bolt icon.
  2. In the report drop-down, select Rank Report.
  3. Before clicking Next, use the address search bar to set the focal point of the report.
    1. Alternatively, use pan and zoom to locate the site of interest. Once found, click on the map to drop a pin.
  4. The Report Wizard panel will change, however if it does not after placing a pin, click Next
  5. Use the radio buttons to choose either Circle or Drivetime, then use the slider or the text box to choose the study area distance. Use the dropdown to set the study area units.
    1. Selecting Predefined Area will instead allow you to create a report using standard geographies which is explained in the section above.
  6. After setting up the study area, click Next.
  7. In the Rank Geography drop-down, select the geography you would like to gather information on.

  8. Navigate to the section Setting Up the Variable Set to start adding demographic or layer variables to pull in the Rank report.
    1. Running the report at this stage without any variables selected will output a file with a list of the chosen geography that is in the search area (i.e., list of all Zip codes within 5 miles). Skip to the Running the Rank Report section below.

Setting Up the Variable Set

Adding Demographic Variables

  1. Click on the  icon to open the Add Variables to Batch window. Select a variable by highlighting the number or percent then click the Add Variables button.
    1. The Add Variables to Batch window will stay open until you close it. Keep selecting and adding other variables as needed.
    2. Click on the Select a Category dropdown to see what other categories are available.
    3. Ensure the variable value is selected instead of the name of the variable.
    4. Add multiple variables from different lines at the same time by clicking on your first variable and then holding the Ctrl key + Click for any additional variables. (i.e., Bachelor’s, Master’s, Professional School and Doctorate Degree)
    5. To sum multiple variables (i.e., Total Population from Age 18 – 35). Click on the first variable you would like to add and then select the SHIFT key + Click on the last variable. The range of variables will then be highlighted.
      1. All variables must be within the same variable category and they must be grouped together.
      2. Select Add Total.
  2. After adding the variables to the variable set, close the Add Variables to Batch tab. All selected variables added from the previous steps will be listed.
    1. Click on a variable to open additional editing options, such as editing the name or format.
  3. To remove a variable that you have accidentally added, click on the Trashcan  icon.
  4. To save the list of variables you have added/edited, select the Save  Icon.
    1. When saving, provide a unique name to your variable set, use the Save a Copy option and click Save.
    2. The Share option allows other users to use this set of variables.
    3. The Overwrite option will overwrite the existing variable set with the currently loaded set of variables. Use caution when overwriting variable sets.
  5. To open an existing Variable Set, click on the Load Variable Set Icon  and click load.

Adding Custom Variables from a Layer

To create and add a custom variable based on a layer within your Sitewise Pro account, please refer to step 4 in the Custom Batch document. Variable Sets are shared between Rank and Custom Batch reports.
  1. If variables from a layer need to be added to a demographic variable set created in the previous section, you can open the variable set in the batch menu and continue adding new variables there.
  2. Ensure the batch variable set is saved so it can be retrieved in the Rank report menu.
    1. When saving your variable set in Custom Batch for Rank reports, you may use the Overwrite option (in step 3 above) to update the original demographic variable set with the new layer variable additions.
  3. Refer to step 5 in the Adding Demographic Variables section to load in your updated variable set.

Running the Rank Report

Now that you have set your rank report geographies and created your variable set or loaded a variable set, it's time to run the report.
  1. You can optionally add your email address. This will ensure the report is delivered to you even if you close Sitewise.

  2. Select Next at the bottom right of the Rank Report Wizard panel to begin generating the Rank report.
  3. A download link will appear in the bottom right-hand side of the internet browser for smaller batch requests.
    1. A copy of the export will also be sent to your email if you entered it in step 1 above.
