ChainXY Competitors and Cotenants

ChainXY provides a comprehensive collection of retail and restaurant chain locations. This data helps bolster market research by offering valuable insights into potential competition, desirable co-tenants, and traffic generators.  ChainXY tracks over 8,000 chains worldwide.

Use Cases

  1. Site Selection: I'm constantly looking for the best places to grow our footprint, and understanding retail centers, store layouts, and nearby tenants plays a significant role in that. I want to be able to evaluate the local market, identify who else is operating nearby, and use that data to make confident and informed decisions about where to open next.
  2. Competitor Tracking: I closely monitor a particular competitor whose growth trajectory often mirrors ours. I've noticed a strong correlation between their expansion and our own success. Is there a way for me to quickly see where they've opened new locations over the past 12 months?

Methodology

ChainXY employs a robust methodology to collect and validate its data:
  1. Data Collection: Each chain is tracked by scraping locations from the chain's official website to gather all relevant details about their store locations.
  2. Geocoding Process: They use a patented, multi-step geocoding process, including analyst revisions, to ensure the accuracy of location data.
  3. Crowdsourcing: Once the data is published, ChainXY leverages crowdsourcing to refine location information, using feedback from platform users and partners.
  4. ID System: ChainXY implements an ID system that tracks location additions and removals from their database, allowing users to identify new openings and closures.
  5. Quality Assurance:  ChainXY emphasizes quality assurance as a key part of its approach to location data. Their process involves ongoing validation and refinement to support data accuracy and consistency over time, making it a foundational aspect of their data collection and maintenance efforts.

Limitations

  1. Website Accuracy: The data is collected directly from the company’s website, so its accuracy depends on the company’s efforts to keep the website updated. As a result, there may be a delay in reflecting store openings or closures, depending on the available data.
  2. Chain Size: ChainXY primarily tracks larger chains, so smaller chains or independent stores may not be included in the dataset.
  3. No Performance Data: ChainXY only tracks publicly available location data from the chain’s website, so it does not provide performance metrics like sales or foot traffic for individual stores.

FAQ

What is the data coverage?
ChainXY primarily tracks chains in North America, however, major brands are also tracked in various countries around the world. Contact Support for more information.
How often is the data updated?
Each chain is updated every 30 to 90 days in ChainXY. This data is then updated in Sitewise weekly.

What if I don't see the chain I need?
Our Support team can provide more information about what is currently available in the ChainXY database. If you are looking for a chain that is not currently tracked, the Sitewise Team can request a quote to add it.
The pushpin for one of the chain locations is not in the exact location. What can I do?
ChainXY is very diligent, and the vast majority of locations are exactly where they should be. If you do come across a pushpin that is out of place, you can suggest a new location through Sitewise.
  1. On the map, move the pushpin and add notes in the pop-up window.
  2. Once you submit the suggestion, the pin will return to its original location, and the new suggested site will be sent to ChainXY for review and validation.
  3. Once they confirm the site location, the pin will be updated.

What ChainXY layers can I add?
Sitewise offers several layers that utilize Chainxy data, including layers for competitors, cotenant networks, and traffic generators. For a complete list of available chains, reach out to the Sitewise team, and we'll send you our handy chain selector document.
In addition to tracking the location of other chains, Sitewise provides more detailed layers that focus on growth trends and market size. These layers are called "ChainXY State/DMA Summary" and include:
  1. Current Open Locations by DMA/State: Displays the number of open stores for a selected chain, which will be displayed by DMA or State depending on preference.
  2. 12-Month Growth by DMA/State: Shows the number of locations opened or closed within the past 12 months.
  3. 12-Month % Growth by DMA/State: Displays growth as a percentage, allowing users to quickly identify emerging areas or regions that competitors have deemed less profitable.
What location attributes do ChainXY track?
ChainXY track an array of attributes, including but not limited to the below:
  1. Chain Name
  2. Address details including state, zip, latitude, longitude, etc.
  3. SIC code
  4. Category
  5. Store hours – not available for all, as the data is pulled from the chain's website.
