The Trade Area Builder tool is used to create and save Polygon Study Areas, composed of pre-defined geographic units. Pre-defined geographic units are boundaries such as Block Groups, ZIP Codes, Census Tracts, and Metropolitan Statistical Areas.
Use Cases
- I want to build a protected territory for an open location based off a population of 50K
- I want to be able to visualize where my primary customer base may be coming from on the map based off of blockgroups.
Setting up the Trade Area Builder
- Click the polygon
icon button located on the main tool bar.

- Click the
icon which is now visible on the left-hand side of the screen. This will prompt the Trade Area Builder to open on the right-hand side of the screen.

- Optional: Enter an address or location in the search box. It is also possible to pan and zoom on the map to the desired location.
- Select the Predefined Geography that will form the building blocks of the trade area being built. Several options are available, such as Blockgroups, Census Tracts and DMAs.
- Set the dropdown to Using Demographics or No Metric – this makes it possible to view a selected demographic variable (e.g. total population) while building the trade area.
- Click on Category and select one of the dropdown options.
- Select a variable from the category chosen in step 5a.
- Click the Add a Variable button.

- Optional: Select a polygon table from the dropdown menu to save the trade area as needed. For more information on table creation, read this article.
Editing Your Trade Area in Builder
- Review the Demographic DataReview the Demographic Data
- When selecting geographic polygons based on a demographic metric, the total value will appear in the Trade Area Capture Metric section. This value is updated as you select and deselect the polygons.
- Several additional tools are available for creating the trade area:
- Click on the
icon to add polygons based on their geographic code. - Click on the
icon to upload a list of geography codes from a file on your computer. - Click on the
icon to access the Data Fit tool.
- To Deselect Polygons
- Click on the dropdown arrow
to deselect any polygons by geographic code.
- Click on the
icon to deselect all polygons
- Click the save button to bring up the Polygon Study Area window.
After saving, your Trade Area can now be reviewed, with several options available in the
Profile Tab.
