College and University Data (IPEDS)

College and University Data (IPEDS)

Introduction

IPEDS, also known as the Integrated Postsecondary Education Data System, is a data collection system managed by the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES). It gathers extensive information on U.S. colleges and universities, including institutional characteristics, enrollment figures, and faculty demographics. IPEDS data can be useful for organizations who target a young, diverse consumer base. Brands that establish themselves near campuses can tap into a steady flow of students, faculty, and visiting families, creating a strong customer base with high engagement potential.

Use Case

  1. Knowing the number of universities in an area can offer an indication of the age profile.
  2. Enrollment figures offer an understanding of the educational attainment level of the area.

Methodology

IPEDS collects data through a series of mandatory surveys completed by all institutions that participate in federal student aid programs.

Institutions provide their data through a centralized online portal, where it is verified by the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES) to ensure accuracy. NCES performs data validation checks and offers institutions tools to review and correct discrepancies, helping to maintain consistency and reliability across data submissions.

Limitations

  1. Self-Reported Data: Data is provided by institutions, which may lead to inconsistencies or errors, despite validation by NCES.
  2. Institutional Coverage: Only institutions participating in federal student aid programs report to IPEDS, potentially excluding specialized or non-traditional schools.
