US School Data (NCES)

US School Data (NCES)

Public and private school data can be useful when assessing the suitability of a trade area for a potential location, as it helps identify areas with strong community appeal and steady foot traffic. Knowing the quality of nearby schools can help predict population growth and neighborhood stability. The data for both Public and Private schools include enrollment numbers, student-teacher ratios and demographic breakdowns, which allows for comparisons between public and private education. This article explores the significance of Public & Private Schools data, its methodology, and its limitations.

Use Cases

  1. NCES data can help brands identify trade areas with family-orientated communities. This can be useful if your core demographic includes children, teenagers, or parents.

Methodology

The NCES collects data on Public Schools primarily through the Common Core of Data (CCD), which is an annual national census of all public elementary and secondary schools, school districts, and state education agencies. Schools and districts report data directly to state education departments, which in turn submit this data to the NCES.

Data on private schools is collected through the Private School Universe Survey (PSS), which is a survey that’s conducted every 2 years. NCES collects and aggregates administrative data from these schools and districts, including enrollment numbers, staffing, student-teacher ratios, and other operational information.

Limitations

  1. Data Accuracy and Completeness: The quality of NCES data depends on accurate reporting from state agencies and individual schools.
  2. External Influences: The data does not account for external factors, such as socioeconomic conditions or local policies, that can impact school performance.
