United States Standard Geographies

These boundaries are provided by the demographic data suppliers and are connected to the demographic database subscription you have licensed in your account.  

Blockgroup  

Block Groups (BGs) are statistical divisions that contain between 600 and 3,000 people and are used o present data and control block numbering. This is the basic geographic division for thematic maps in the US, within Sitewise Pro. A BG boundary usually covers a contiguous area which may represent several city blocks and uses recognizable boundaries such as roads and rivers.  

Census Tract  

Census Tracts are small, relatively permanent statistical subdivisions of a county. They are the third geographic subdivision in the FIPS system following state and county, but preceding block groups. Census Tracts average about 4,000 inhabitants.   

Zip Code  

Zip Codes are geographic postal codes used by the United States Postal Service.   

County  

Counties are the largest administrative division of a state put into geographic regions.   

CBSA  

Core Based Statistical Area is a geographic area that consists of one or more counties (or equivalents), anchored by an urban center of at least 10,000 people, plus adjacent counties that are socioeconomically tied to the urban center by commuting.  

Census Region  

Census Regions are groupings of states and the District of Columbia that subdivide the United States for the presentation of census data. There are 9 total: West Pacific, West Mountain, West North Central, West South-Central, East North Central, East South-Central, New England, Middle Atlantic, and South Atlantic.  

DMA  

Designated Market Areas are regions where the population can receive the same (or similar) local television and radio station offerings and may also include other types of media, such as newspapers and internet content. DMA’s can coincide or overlap with one or more metropolitan areas, though rural regions with few significant population centers can also be designated as markets.  

State  

A state is a constituent political entity, of which there are currently 50.
