Dissemination Area (DA)

A dissemination area is a relatively small but stable administrative geographic unit composed of one or more dissemination blocks. It is the finest scale at which census data is disseminated, with an average population of 400 to 700 residents. This is also the finest scale at which data is visualized within Sitewise.

Forward Sortation Area (FSA)

A Forward Sortation Area is a geographic unit based on the first three characters of the Canadian postal code, with each character providing a different piece of information. The first character (letter) refers to the province or part of it, the second character (number), differentiates between rural and urban location, and the last character (letter) refers to the geographic district within that location.

Census Tract

Census Tracts are small geographic units created in all Census Metropolitan Areas (CMAs) with a core population of 50,000 or more people. This provides a geographic level between the DA and CMA for more detailed economic and social analysis.

Census Metropolitan Areas (CMA)

Census Metropolitan Areas are large, densely populated centers made up of adjacent municipalities that are economically and socially integrated. This must include a minimum population of 100,000 of which at least 50,000 live in the core region.

Census Subdivision (CSD)

Census Subdivision is a general term for municipalities or areas treated as municipal equivalents for statistical purposes.

Census Division (CD)

Census Divisions are intermediary regions between province/territory level and municipality subdivisions. These areas usually consist of neighboring municipalities, joined together for the purpose of regional planning and management of common services.

Province

Canada has 10 provinces and 3 territories, which are sub-national administrative regions as defined under the national constitution.
